Research in the laboratory is aimed at characterizing novel controls of pain in order to develop alternative analgesic strategies for physiological and pathological pain states.
Currently, we focus our attention on the role of several classes of neuroactive molecules, all of them capable of modulating physiological processes at the periphery and in the nervous system. These large-spectrum endogenous compounds, which could play a key role in shaping pain responses, are currently morphine alcaloids (Dr Yannick Goumon) and oxytocin (Dr Alexandre Charlet)
One of the big strength of the laboratory is that all projects benefits from the large technical expertise of the different PIs (molecular/cellular biology, biochemistry, cellular and in vivo electrophysiology, physiology and behavior). Our studies are implemented with the help of several well-established models of physiological and chronic pain.
Clinical research of the laboratory is conducted at Hautepierre Hospital NICU (Prof Pierre Kuhn) and mainly focus on the long-term consequences of perinatal perturbations on the nociceptive system ontogeny and function. This research is supported by fundamental research projects analyzing the impact of these perturbations on cortical development (Prof Vincent Lelièvre) and on pain controls (Prof Pierrick Poisbeau).
